Biography

I’m a ceramic artist living and working in Cardiff, Wales.

My interest in making with clay began like many others, at school. The art department was well equipped for ceramics. It had numerous potters wheels and the largest electric kiln in the area. Enthusiastic to learn about ceramics, specialist ceramic art teachers saw potential in me that they supported and encouraged generously. I will be forever grateful to my teachers Mr Steve Groves and the late Mr Mike Organ, who also co-founded The South Wales Potters organisation, for opening my eyes to the possibilities of clay, something that was to stay with me for a lifetime.

Returning to working with clay, I studied MA Ceramics and Maker at Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2022, under one of the UK’s foremost ceramic artists Claire Curneen, graduating with a distinction in 2024. Shortly after I accepted an exciting offer to join Cardiff’s Fireworks Clay Studios artists collective.

Artist Statement

Using an intuitive approach to making, earthenware clay and only hands as tools, I sculpt individual forms based on the vessel that evolve from a meditative correspondence between maker and the material agency of clay. An emphasis on hand marks is central to this making process, as evidence of the truly handmade, a record of touch working sympathetically with clays unique natural plastic material properties and reflecting a human place in nature. Treatment of the surface with clay slips, pigments and glazes highlight fingerprints and the hand mark texture. Through the work I explore societies detachment from a deeper embodied connection with the material world caused by the dominance of vision. The work serves as a reminder of the importance of our analogue, full embodied sensory connection to the world, in providing points of reflection, evoking a sense of touch.
